Kensington-Bellwoods Community Legal Services (KBCLS) is seeking a Treasurer to join its Board of Directors.

ABOUT KBCLS

KBCLS is a not-for-profit community legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide free legal services to low-income residents of our community.  Legal services include providing summary advice, representation and assistance, as well as referrals on non-legal matters of concern to clients.  Areas of law practiced by staff lawyers and legal workers include income maintenance, tenants’ rights, employment standards, human rights and immigration.  We are also engaged in a range of public legal education, law reform, and community development activities which include community outreach and community organizing.

The Board of Directors oversees the work of the clinic, which is carried out by paid unionized staff, and volunteers.

THE ROLE

  1. Serve in a volunteer capacity as a member of the Board that is committed to:
    • Addressing the legal and community development needs of low-income individuals and families;
    • Goals that include working towards the elimination of poverty in our society, and increasing access to justice.
  1. Attend monthly Board meetings, and other Board meetings as necessary.
  2. Participate in the life of the organization between Board meetings as necessary and appropriate.
  3. As Treasurer, be responsible for chairing the Finance Committee of the Board which entails working closely with the Clinic Coordinator to:
    • Advise the Board on the financial management of the organization;
    • Ensure compliance with the clinic’s financial policies and controls, and any applicable LAO policies;
    • Ensure the preparation of budgets and engage in the annual audit;
    • Monitor cash flow.

QUALIFICATIONS

    • A CPA financial designation is required for this position.
    • An understanding of the KBCLS community and a passion for its cause.
    • Ability to operate as part of a team.
    • Preference will be given to individuals living and/or working within the clinic’s catchment area (south of Bloor to Lake Ontario, west of Yonge, east of Ossington/Strachan).
