REPORTS TO : Development Officer

LOCATION: Kitchener Office; 283 Duke st W

HOURS: Volunteer a minimum of 6 hours once per week, Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. 12-week minimum commitment.

 

Alternatives Media is a Canadian environmental, charitable, non-profit organization which has been providing information, academic support and programs for 50 years, and has recently expanded services and programs to focus on Canadian youth. From our very founding, Alternatives Media has been dedicated to approaching the complex (and interrelated) issues connected with environmentalism from the lens of seeking to provide pathways to progress. We believe that our role as a environmental media charity is to shine a light on the alternative solutions, to share stories that spark conversations, and, fundamentally, to help foster the ideas and innovations that will lead to more environmentally-sustainable future.

 

Overview

We are looking for a volunteer candidate that can manage and expand our intern and volunteer programs.

The candidate for this position will be responsible for for the administration and coordination of volunteer recruitment, management, retention and assignments, liaising with the development officer on the placement of volunteers.

 

Primary Responsibilities • Design and implement strategies for volunteer recruitment • Manage all external volunteer postings including job boards and posting websites • Preparing and conducting interviews, placements, and coordinating orientation/training of volunteers • Preparing and monitoring volunteer placements • Maintaining regular communication with volunteers. • Prepare and conduct volunteer recognition activities • Maintain volunteer database, filing system for applications and other relevant details (police checks) for each volunteer and track all documentation as it pertains to volunteers • Conduct and attend information/recruitment meetings • Promote volunteerism through local schools, including Colleges and Universities. Flexible hours (approximately 6 hours). potential to work remotely, must have access to computer. Judgment will need to be exercised in determining the fit and assignment of volunteers, assessing the qualifications of prospective volunteers and deciding which items should be referred to the attention of the Executive Director. • Exercise tact, discretion, and confidentiality

 

Knowledge, Skills, Education And Experience • Experienced and skilled with computers - including Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word as well as Google Drive (working with Google docs, sheets) • Strong typing skills • Prior experience working in an office • Proficiency in navigating the internet • Ability to organize and set priorities • Strong interpersonal skills • An above average ability to communicate orally and in writing is necessary. • Must be capable of planning, organizing and directing under minimum supervision. • Post-secondary school education (college/university) preferred
