 Scarborough Community Legal Services (SCLS) is a non-profit community legal clinic.  We have been providing free legal services to low income residents of Scarborough since 1982.  We are funded by Legal Aid Ontario and we assist people to meet their most basic needs by providing services in areas of law such as housing, employment, immigration, and social assistance.  To help individuals, we offer a range of services including legal advice and information, legal representation, self-help assistance, and referrals. We also work on systemic issues to promote the legal well-being of the broader community through community organizing, lobbying, test cases, and public legal education.

Our Board of Directors

Our legal clinic is governed by a 13 member volunteer Board of Directors.  The Board is elected by members of the community and is responsible for the overall administration and strategic direction of our clinic. The Board establishes policies and oversees the administrative, personnel, and financial management of the legal clinic.  Our Board members bring a mix of skills and backgrounds to the table and are committed to ensuring the success of SCLS.

We are seeking Board Members with experience or expertise in the following areas:

  • labour law (preference will be given to lawyers and/or paralegals with experience practicing labour law);
  • accounting and/or bookkeeping;
  • human resources;
  • management experience in a unionized environment; or
  • strong connections with Scarborough’s community agencies and non-profit organizations

You should have:

  • Experience or expertise in one of the above described areas;
  • A commitment to social justice and serving the needs of low income individuals and families
  • Support for our values and mission
  • The ability to work collaboratively with Board Members and staff
  • A personal commitment to give the time necessary to meet the responsibilities of a Board Member.
  • Preference will be given to residents of Scarborough.

Expected Commitment

We are seeking a commitment to stand for election at our Annual General Meeting on October 23, 2019 and to serve for a minimum of two years. Board members are elected for two year terms.  Board Members must have the ability to commit the time and resources to prepare for and attend monthly board meetings, to participate on Board Committees, and to attend our Annual General Meeting.  On average, this requires a time commitment of approximately 4 hours per month.
