Vancouver is one of few Canadian cities where recreation programming is offered via partnerships with citizen-driven, community-based not-for-profit societies. Led by elected, unpaid and creative community volunteers, the Trout Lake Community Centre Association works closely with skilled and committed Vancouver Park Board staff to ensure that the community is reflected in, and benefits from, the activities at the Centre.

Our responsibilities include: shaping programming, hiring instructors, raising funds and accessing grants, developing rental policy, advocating for our parks and ensuring that decisions affecting the community are made at the grassroots level.

Additionally, as part of our recently completed five-year strategic plan, we have adopted a commitment to engage, empower and educate citizens on climate action. We are also founding partners in a soon-to-be-launched initiative called Communities for Climate Hope that will inspire community centre associations to work towards a shared goal of championing climate solutions for Vancouverites.


A medium to long-term organizational communications strategy to complement our recently completed five-year strategic plan.


  • The development of a comprehensive communications strategy (could be a one-off project or evolve into a Communications Advisor type of volunteer role)
  • The strategy should set out the key communications elements, press/PR and marketing plans, as well as web and social media strategies
  • The volunteer will collaborate in direct communication with our Communications Committee and Board Administrator
  • The volunteer will be acknowledged for their contributions


  • At least 7-10 years of experience in communications or public relations
  • Experience in designing/implementing effective communications strategies for not-for-profit organizations
  • Proficiency incorporating social media and other digital platforms into a comprehensive communications strategy
  • Demonstrated understanding of public policy and the role of communications in garnering needed support
  • Excellent writing skills

Nice to haves:

  • Previous experience administering Wordpress websites
  • Familiar with website design and some technical aspects 
  • Experience migrating website platforms is desirable
