5-6 meetings per year,  3-4 hours/meeting + 3-4 hours/month

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA) is a non-profit housing organization that mobilizes volunteers and communities to help working, lower income families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.   Our Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee is looking for a volunteer to assist its members in fulfilling its financial, audit and risk management oversight responsibilities for the Board of Directors of the organization.

 Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure that an independent audit is undertaken every year;
  • Provide oversight to ensure that the interests of stakeholders are properly protected in relation to financial affairs of the Organization;
  • Monitor, review and report to the Board, the Organization’s financial position and accounting affairs, including the reliability of the financial information used by the Board and contained in the documents and announcements approved by the Board for issuance on behalf of the Organization; and
  • Monitor and review and report to the Board the effectiveness of the Organization's internal control policies and procedures for the identification, assessment, and reporting of risks;
  • Oversee the identification of the risks which the Organization may face and make recommendations on how to mitigate such risks

 Qualifications:

  • CPA or other financial designation (e.g., CFA)
  • Experience (BOD or operational) with a non-profit and/or in the retail, land development or construction sector
  • Confident/fluent with financial statements, management reports, performance and risk metrics
  • Able to interpret/assess detailed financial information in the context of an organization’s overall strategy and offer meaningful insights/recommendations accordingly
  • Ideally, some audit experience (either professionally and personally or via participation on an audit committee)
  • Comfortable working in a committee environment
  • Available for 5-6 meetings/year
  • Engaged by the Habitat mission
