African-Canadian Continuing Education Society(ACCES) is seeking a volunteer who could fulfill the role of Treasurer for its Society Board of Directors.  The incumbent has been relocated to Quebec for employment, and is unable to continue as a result.

About ACCES

  • A registered charity founded by Beth and George Scott, residents of Surrey, B.C. in 1993.
  • ACCES raises money from donors throughout Canada and the U.S. and partners with various organizations to provide post-secondary scholarships to financially challenged Kenyan students, along with supporting student clubs activities such as community health interventions and primary school supports in partnership with various NGOs and government ministries.

Treasurer’s Role

The Treasurer has a position of director on the Society and Foundation Boards and:

  • Provides fiscal oversight to all of ACCES’s operations in Canada and Africa.
  • Advises the Society Board on financial and business issues.
  • Working with the Executive Director, oversees the accounting processes of the Society and directs the annual audit of accounts leading to the Annual Financial Statements. Day to day bookkeeping done by support staff.
  • Provides advice on fiscally related processes involving partnerships, fund-raising, administration and other matters related to the workings of the Society.

Requirements for Treasurer’s Position

Applicants will have:

  • Reasonable spare time (3-5 hours per month maximum) to devote to the position.
  • An accounting background or banking/business background with experience in finance is ideal.
  • Experience in budget construction and oversight with annual audits.
  • Knowledge of and experience with CRA tax laws and procedures.
