Evergreen’s Outdoor Learning and Play programs connect children, youth and educators to nature through immersive, creative, and urban exploration activities.

As an Outdoor Teaching Assistant (OTA) with our Visiting Schools Program, you will apply your teaching skills to help deliver and support curriculum-based education program with groups of students from kindergarten to grade 6, as they visit Evergreen Brick Works. This is a great program for individuals looking to develop experience in outdoor education and grow your teaching skills through activities like working with plants, cooking, building, hiking, biking and science-based field studies. Outdoor Teaching Assistants play a key role in Evergreen’s efforts to reconnect Toronto’s children to nature.

What you bring:

  • You have strong teaching skills and an enthusiasm for nature, with some knowledge of areas like ecology, natural history and physical geography—but much of this can be learned on the job.
  • You are interested in place-based, hands-on learning.
  • You are a team player and reflective practitioner, learning by doing, debriefing each day and continually developing our program and your skills.

Commitment: 2-3 weekday shifts (Monday - Friday) per month, from 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM, across the season.

Assets (but not required) could include experience in: urban agriculture, fire tending, outdoor cooking, first aid training, naturalist, foraging, environmental education, ecology, natural history, physical geography, music and more.

When & where: Programming takes place on weekdays throughout the school year starting Mid-September until June. A typical day is 6 hours long from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Activities are based at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Ave) with explorations into the ravine system.

How we’ll support you: There will be a *mandatory* training session on Thursday October 17th from 6:00-8:30pm at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Avenue) with additional field and program training happening on the job from staff and experienced volunteers. Evergreen education staff provide the overall program leadership while assistants primarily work with small groups of students who are engaged in hands-on experiences. There will be continual opportunities for de-briefing your work and receiving feedback from staff.

Perks: OTA volunteers can take pride in knowing that they’ll be inspiring children and youth of all ages to discover with and care for the natural world around them, while building your own knowledge and skills. Be part of an expanding and exciting experiential fun and learning program as a valued member of the team. You’ll build your nature-based program and teaching skills and get lots of time outside and active in a beautiful setting. Volunteers completing 20+ hours will receive a t-shirt, special discounts to the Evergreen Garden Market and access to volunteer social events. References available on request.

Good to know: Programs happens rain, sun or snow, so you’ll need to come dressed or the weather, with closed-toed shoes. Outdoor Learning and Play volunteers are required to complete Vulnerable Sector Checks (except Sprouts) and may need to provide references. Free shuttle bus transportation from Broadview Station is available or take the TTC 28 Bayview bus.  Paid parking and bicycle parking available.
