In-Home ESL Tutors for Parents

Help parents build their English language skills and become more familiar with their community as an ESL tutor!

 Purpose: To help newcomer parents (clients)—who can’t access ESL classes because of child care needs—learn English. You’ll assist parents to read, write and practice conversational English they need to access resources, educational programs and employment opportunities. You’ll visit the parents in their home while their children are present.

  RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mentor parent to improve their knowledge of English conversational skills
  • Identify learning needs and provide support
  • Help client develop self-confidence speaking and listening to English
  • Research relevant topics of interest to promote learning and life skills
  • Plan, organize and prepare weekly lesson plans
  • Prepare topics to widen client’s knowledge of community resources and opportunities
  • Provide feedback and guidance on language development
  • Attend monthly volunteer education/training
  • Submit weekly log

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (9am-5pm)
  • 1 Visit per week at a time that suits your schedule and location as much as possible
  • Minimum 2 hours a week or more if available
  • 12 visists
  • Mandatory training session totaling 3-6 hours

AGE REQUIREMENT: 18 years of age or older

 Location: Visits occur in the homes of families with at least one child under the age of 5 living in the priority neighbourhoods in Toronto.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching ESL to newcomers or willingness to be trained
  • Desire to mentor and tutor newcomers on functional and everyday language skills
  • Dependable and self motivated, with the ability to facilitate tutoring sessions with minimal supervision
  • Empathetic and compassionate about the challenges faced by newcomers
  • Ability to recognize and respect cultural differences and apply this knowledge in cross-cultural interactions
  • Knowledge of community resources geared to supporting newcomers
  • Good command of the English language
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

CHALLENGES OF THE POSITION

  • Working in the community (in family homes)
  • Travel within Toronto

BOUNDARIES:

  • Keep the disclosure of your personal information limited
  • Unable to accept gifts from clients

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING

  • Orientation and training from regulated professionals on an ongoing basis
  • Monthly volunteer support meetings
  • Ongoing education/development opportunities

SCREENING AND SUPERVISION

  • Application form with two references
  • Interview
  • Signed volunteer and confidentiality agreements
  • Clear Criminal reference check including the Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Report to Program Supervisor on a regular basis
  • Volunteer Coordinator will be available for support
