The Mood Disorders Association of Ontario (MDAO) offers free peer support, counseling and recovery programs to people across Ontario living with mental health challenges. We provide drop-in peer support groups, recovery programs, family and youth clinical support, early intervention for mood disorders and psychosis and online tools focused on wellness and recovery.

We are looking for  mental health peer support volunteers to assist in the delivery of our key peer support programs:

Phone Peer Support Volunteer: The Telephone Information and Peer Support (TIPS) volunteer offers support to callers through our confidential, free phone helpline that is open daily during the week. Through the warm line, the volunteer provides a listening ear and support regardless of diagnostic criteria and information about MDAO programs and other resources as requested. This person also performs reception duties.

Peer Support Group Facilitator Volunteer: This person provides leadership as a facilitator in peer support groups for individuals and their families living with mood disorders. 

Training and orientation are provided, as is ongoing support for the volunteer. This is an opportunity to build interpersonal communication skills as well as to derive personal satisfaction from the important job of helping others.

Key skills, competencies and knowledge areas:

  • Ability to understand the different types of “peer experience", ability to translate experience into knowledge and peer practice, and ability to provide support regardless of diagnostic criteria or use of mental health services.
  • Active listening skills and empathy
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Accountability and Dependability, Ethics and Integrity
  • Ability to negotiate complex boundaries of self-disclosure
  • Having personal or family member lived experience of mental health challenges
