Development Officer

Development Officer – Part-Time (0.4 FTE - 16 hours/week)

This is an exciting and comprehensive position with the opportunity to play an integral role in the evolution and sustainability of the Dalai Lama Center, and the promotion of Heart-Mind well-being in the province and beyond.

The mission of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace + Education is to educate the hearts of children by informing, inspiring and engaging the communities around them. Our goal is for BC to become the first major jurisdiction in the world to realize the Dalai Lama’s vision for a Heart-Mind balance in schools, community and families. The Dalai Lama Center is a non-religious, non-political organization that brings a collaborative and evidence-informed approach to the social and emotional development of children and youth.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Dalai Lama Center is seeking a Development Officer who will be responsible for the implementation of annual and long-term plans and strategies focused on raising funds from individuals, corporations, foundations and government by proactively matching donor interests to organizational priorities. This role is both strategic and practical in nature, and includes identification of potential donors and grants opportunities, development of grants proposals, and donor stewardship. The Development Officer will work with the President & CEO to create and implement a comprehensive and diversified Development Plan for the organization.

 

REPORTING

The role reports to the President & CEO and works in close collaboration with all Dalai Lama Center staff, including the Program Director, DLC staff, consultants and the volunteer Board of Trustees.

 

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Researches and makes recommendations to the CEO for long-term funding programs including Major Gifts, Annual Giving and Legacy Giving.
  • Undertakes research, development and writing of solicitations and proposals.
  • Works with program staff, management and key volunteers in identifying funding prospects and strategies to fund specific programs.
  • Meets with funding prospects, identifies funding opportunities, and establishes & maintains strong relationships on behalf of the DLC.
  • Prepares sponsorship proposals, reports, thank-you letters and other documents on behalf of the President & CEO.
  • Collaborates with the DLC Communications staff to develop donor and event communications, and to maintain communications with stakeholders.
  • In conjunction with the President & CEO, plans and implements donor cultivation strategies and stewardship programs for corporate and individual supporters of the DLC.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, develops and implements a Donor Stewardship Plan, including donor recognition policies and practices.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with all employees and volunteers in the organization to execute fundraising programs, events and projects.
  • With the President & CEO, helps to establish excellent working relationships and collaborations with community groups, funders, sponsors, government and other organizations to achieve the overall and fund development goals of the organization.
  • Prepares fundraising status reports for the Board of Trustees and makes presentations to the Trustees or other groups as appropriate.
  • Oversees the maintenance of the DLC’s funder and sponsor files and contracts, donor and prospect tracking systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma/designation in Fundraising and/or 3-5 years of progressive fund development experience
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising targets in a non-profit environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Well organized with an attention to detail
  • Proven ability to take initiative and bring projects to completion with minimal supervision
  • Reporting and measurement strengths
  • Database experience
  • Prospect research expertise
  • 3-5 years of grant writing expertise
