Community Education Director

Position Summary

STAND (Sex, Teens & Necessary Discussions) Community Education is a vital service provided to local schools as well as other community groups that serve youth in the Surrey, White Rock, Delta and Langley areas. Our workshops are judgement free, up-to-date, respectful, and honest and have been said to be "a modern, empowering view of sex ed". Workshops cover a variety of topics related to sex and relationships including: critical thinking and media literacy, body image, pornography, consent, healthy relationships, relational and sexual decision making, saved sex, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy options, and risk prevention. Our workshops have a profound effect on the choices that youth make regarding their own lives. The Director of STAND provides leadership, development and oversight to all aspects of this program. This position is currently 20 hours per week.

 

Education and Experience

  • Under-graduate or post-graduate degree in a related field.
  • Prefer BC Teacher’s Certification and experience in a public or private school setting.
  • 2-3 years leadership and team development experience, ideally working with and supervising volunteers.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and have own vehicle

  • Maintains a deep and growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ through Bible study, prayer, Church attendance and Christian fellowship.
  • Maintains a lifestyle consistent with the core values that are taught through our Sexual Integrity Community Education program, particularly abstinence outside of marriage
  • Superior skills in team building, leading, supervising, and mentoring volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise considerable independence of action, judgment and initiative within limits of established objectives and policies.
  • Professional representation of the Centre across various community contexts.
  • Ability to plan, develop and coordinate programs with strategic frameworks.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with youth.
  • Strong leadership, excellent communication, public relations, and public speaking skills are essential in this role.
  • Familiar with social media networks, trends and youth/young adult culture
  • Must successfully pass a criminal record check and be willing to sign and adhere to our statement of faith, as well as the Canadian Association of Pregnancy Support Services (CAPSS) core documents

 

Working Relationships

  • The STAND Director reports to the Executive Director of Pregnancy Options and in his/her absence, the Board of Directors
  • The Director recruits, trains, motivates and supervises the STAND volunteers, actively participating and fostering a team approach. 
  • The Director works collaboratively with other staff in every sector of Pregnancy Options, promoting growth and protecting unity within the Centre.

 

Research

  • Ensures that all statistics, facts and information used in presentations and programs are current, reliable and credible; including research on current sexuality trends, language, and laws, sexual integrity, purity and abstinence, sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), healthy relationships, self-esteem, identity, gender issues, teen pregnancies, pornography, and the effects of media. The Director will ensure that all presentation content is culturally relevant.
  • Is knowledgeable and in agreement with the Biblical view of sexuality, and ensures that information and presentations by our STAND team are consistent with these values.
  • Remains current on the work and effect of other organizations, such as Fraser Health, Options for Sexual Health, nursing programs etc., and their outreach into schools and the community.  

 

Workshops

  • Fosters and builds positive, collaborative relationships between the STAND program and local schools, principals, school districts, and other community organizations.  
  • Aware of specific school policies with regard to appropriate content for each school and is mindful of sensitivities of particular teachers and groups. 
  • Remains current with health curriculum taught at both the high school and elementary school levels.
  • Develops new programs, initiatives and avenues of outreach into schools and the community.
  • Regularly contacts schools, teachers and organizations to arrange schedules and ensures that a presenter is available, along with completing appropriate follow-up with schools after each presentation.
  • Ensures that current data, contact details and other pertinent information on schools, teachers, and community groups are recorded and maintained.
  • Arranges timely, appropriate, peer-counsel for students who request additional help following a presentation.
  • Provides oversight, development and design of the department’s multimedia presentations, videos, brochures and other materials used for presentations and promotions.

 

Administration

  • Manages the STAND budget and ensures that funds are stewarded in an appropriate way. 
  • Provides monthly reports and attends meetings with other staff to ensure that priorities are clear, expectations are met and that the STAND department is consistent with the shared vision of the overall ministry.
  • Involved in ongoing professional development through continuing study, reading and participation in areas pertinent to Youth and Sexual Integrity.
