Wellington West Business Improvement Area

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chair, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Wellington West Business Improvement Area consisting of approximately 500 members in the neighbourhoods of Hintonburg and Wellington Village. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the BIAs volunteer board of directors is kept abreast of the BIAs activities, the Executive Director also interacts with municipal staff and councillors, resident associations, community groups, local institutions other business improvement areas, and various other stakeholder groups.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Board shall delegate to the Executive Director the responsibility for the general management and the execution of the policies and programs of the BIA which include:

  • Acting as the Chief Administrative Officer; the senior staff position, responsible for the hiring and termination of all other staff at the discretion of the Board;
  • Attend all meetings of the Board of Managers and be entitled to speak on all matters, without the right to vote;
  • Sit ex-officio, on all committees.

Board of Directors:

  • Provide periodic updates to the Executive Board and Board on the ongoing BIA work plan and upcoming deadlines, as well as bringing forward issues/decisions that require the board’s attention and/or approval.
  • Working with the Treasurer of the Board, prepares the monthly financial statements for board presentations and yearly budget;
  • Oversees accounts receivables and works hand in hand with the City of Ottawa financial staff
  • Represents the BIA at the City’s various stakeholder committees;

Member Services:

  • Develop a sense of community with all BIA stakeholders through Member Services/Advocacy/Communications.


Marketing & Communications:

  • Promote the BIA through Marketing/Media/Special Events/Public Relations/Public Art Projects
  • Oversees the BIA's website, Facebook and social media information and content;

Street Beautification:

  • Maintain the seasonal beautification agreements of the Wellington Street BIA.
  • Oversees graffiti removal program.

Preferred knowledge, skill sets and abilities

  • Excellent leadership and communications skills.
  • Strong planning, organization and project management skills.
  • Experience working with and providing support to Board of directors.
  • Ability to manage staff, service providers, partners, and volunteers.
  • Ability to interact positively with business and property owners and facilitate consultation.
  • Effective group facilitation and networking skills.
  • Marketing experience and competency in web-based communications strategies.
  • Event management experience
  • Post-secondary education in business administration, marketing, planning or related field and /or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3-5 years related work experience. 

Other asset qualifications /skills that would enhance the performance of the Executive Director:

  • Self-starter with the ability to prioritize and requiring limited supervision.
  • Excellent networking and social networking skills
  • Established network of contacts within municipal government
  • Strong speaking and presentation skills.
  • Experience in business recruitment and retention would be an asset
  • Ability to act as a facilitator.
  • Ability to build consensus
  • Ability to speak French
