Coordinator, Community Engagement -1-year contract (maternity leave)

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada supports wildlife research, education and conservation. The Institute promotes informed and compassionate action to improve the environment shared by all Earth's living creatures.

The Position:

JGI Canada is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic individual who can thrive and grow in a unique and important role as the organization’s Coordinator, Community Engagement.

As Coordinator, Community Engagement, you will provide key support to two of the organization’s most important communities.

The coordinator will play a critical role in supporting JGI Canada’s youth education program, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, with an emphasis on stewarding young participants, educators, advisors and other stakeholders.

The coordinator will additionally undertake ongoing outreach to JGI Canada’s supporter base through our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram), media outreach and e-communications. With creativity and an ability to motivate and inspire, the coordinator will have extensive experience in using social media channels to move people to take action, yielding measurable results for the Institute as we strive to engage a wider audience and increase the understanding of, and support for, our work.


Roots & Shoots

Under the direction of the Manager, Roots & Shoots Canada, the Coordinator, Community Engagement will:

  • Coordinate and deliver regional and national youth engagement campaigns
  • Assist in developing and assessing youth programming content
  • Support and guide participants taking action for the planet
  • Oversee planning and logistics for youth-related events
  • Plan and execute recognition programs for educators and youth
  • Work closely with program advisors supporting youth projects
  • Prepare reports on youth programs as required
  • When required/appropriate represent JGI Canada and Roots & Shoots at workshops, conferences, tabled events



Under the direction of the Director, Communications & Fund Development, the Coordinator, Community Engagement will:

  • Establish best practices on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram) to engage and grow JGI Canada’s supporter base
  • Assist with developing content for communication properties (e-newsletters; e-updates; blog posts) on programs, events and campaigns
  • Assist with the development of JGI stories for media and support media outreach
  • Update the JGI Canada website as required
  • Assist in the development and implementation of JGI Canada advocacy and awareness campaigns



  • Participate in regular departmental and organizational meetings
  • Other duties as required



  • Post-Secondary education in relevant field
  • Two to five years experience in the development field and/or in the non-profit sector
  • Demonstrated skills and experience motivating and supporting youth
  • Excellent people skills; ability to develop rapport with a variety of communities
  • Proven project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas and situations in layperson terms
  • Extensive experience utilizing social media in a work environment - Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and social media monitoring tools
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Experience in community building
  • Demonstrated research skills
  • Ability to work in a team and with minimal supervision
