Editor, Programming (Contract to Dec 2018)

Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC) is a leading organization for girls facilitating personal development and leadership. GGC is seeking an EDITOR to work with the Member Experience department to provide overall editorial and writing support during the development of Girls First, our new and dynamic non-formal programming for girls.  Our programs support Girls in five branches: Sparks age 5-6, Brownies age 7-9, Guides age 9 -11, Pathfinders age 12-14, Rangers age 15-17. Programming is delivered by women, ages 18+.  If you are a creative and critical thinker, and passionate about providing empowering programming to Girls, then we look forward to hearing from you!  This is a contract position until December 2018.

 

Your responsibilities will be:

 

  • Provide editorial and writing support for Girls First, as we develop non-formal programming for Girls and young women across all branches of GGC
  • Lead the development of the Girls First voice and tone, developing an approach that is Girl focused and that will engage Girls
  • Provide support to program development teams to maintain voice, language, as well as  consistency of communications with respect to messaging and materials
  • Develop and maintain a Girls First/programming style guide that supports the overall GGC style guide and ensure compliance across all Member Experience materials
  • Audit, proofread and edit all programming copy, including non-formal programming materials, training materials, online materials, resource guides, scrips for audio/video etc., adhering to established Girls First style guide
  • Rewrite content, as needed, for clarity and consistency
  • Develop concepts, research and write Girls First communications materials, including web content, e-blasts, newsletters, etc. in conjunction with the GGC Communications team as required
  • Ensure consistency of style and accuracy of all content, fact checking as needed
  • Consult with team regarding all editorial-related questions
  • Work with Coordinator, Graphic Design to ensure integrity of content throughout layout/design process
  • Contribute to program reviews and revisions and apply best practices with respect to language and style for Girl engagement, Girl-centered involvement and revitalized global focus
  • Work as an integrated member of the Programming team, serving organizational needs as required
  • Work as part of inter-departmental teams, with GGC volunteers, and with external partners
  • Seek consultation and collaboration from the GGC members
  • Prepare progress updates on assigned initiatives for inclusion in regular Programming reports for Board of Directors, Provincial Committees and others as required

 

Qualifications Required

 

  • Degree in English, Communications, Journalism or equivalent education
  • A minimum of three years’ experience editing, copyediting and writing
  • Experience editing in a children’s/youth market, particularly with non-fiction, instructional and reference content
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Knowledge of CP style guide
  • Highly detail oriented with a thorough command of grammar, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to accommodate schedules and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and quickly on a number of projects simultaneously and to prioritize work
  • Ability to work as part of a team – sharing ideas and information
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Highly self-motivated, energetic, and outcome-oriented
  • Strong computer skills – MSOffice, Adobe, and other online publishing software

 

Assets

 

  • Experience working with girls and young women
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience working with a diverse population of volunteers within the non-profit or charitable sector
  • French language skills/fluency
  • Knowledge of/experience with Guiding
